Exploring Code- Switching in Filipino Literature: A Study of Language Use Among Filipino Majors

Abstract

This quantitative study investigates code-switching in Filipino literature with a particular emphasis on majors' language usage. The Philippines is a country with a rich linguistic diversity, and one common phenomenon there is code-switching, which is defined as the alternation between languages or dialects. The principal aims of this study are to quantify the incidence of code-switching in a range of literary texts and student compositions, categorize the code-switching contexts, and examine associations between demographic variables (e.g., age, gender, and educational attainment) and the inclination to swap codes.

A mixed-method approach is utilized, emphasizing the collection of quantitative data. Using a structured coding framework, a corpus of literary texts and student essays is examined for instances of code-switching. Students studying Filipino literature are also given surveys to complete to collect demographic information and self-reported language usage patterns. To investigate the connections between these factors and linguistic practices, statistical analysis is done using tests of correlation and descriptive statistics.

Important information about the participants' patterns of code-switching is revealed by the analysis. According to the study, code-switching happens in about X% of the texts that were examined, with higher frequencies seen in specific contexts like casual conversation and cultural allusions. Additionally, demographic research shows a correlation between higher incidences of code-switching and variables like age and educational background, implying that younger students and those with a wider range of educational experiences are more prone to participate in this behavior.

By highlighting the significance of code-switching as a reflection of social dynamics and cultural identity, these findings add to our understanding of the linguistic diversity in Filipino literature. According to the study, teaching students about code-switching can improve their understanding of linguistic nuances and foster a heightened sense of cultural awareness.
As a result, this quantitative study clarifies the frequency and importance of code-switching in Filipino literature and emphasizes how crucial a role it plays in forming linguistic identity. The study emphasizes how crucial it is for literary studies to acknowledge and value multilingualism, and it ultimately pushes for more investigation into linguistic practices in scholarly discourse.
